Survey Examines Job Preferences of 2008 Medical Residents and Fellows
by Molly Howell
Pinnacle Health Group
With an impending physician shortage and a generation of aging baby boomers, medical facilities must stay informed about the best ways to reach and recruit physicians. Fuzion Health Group decided to go directly to one pool of candidates and solicit their feedback about job preferences.
These physicians-in-training are the future leaders in medicine. Their values, communication methods and interests offer insight on how to recruit and retain them at your facilities.
Results for the first of three surveys are in.
Expectations vary about the timeframe for the interview process but other matters gained consensus.
The majority wants more guidance related to making a good job choice. Specifically, they are eager to understand employment contracts and compensation profit structures.
And it is no surprise: Email is the unanimous choice for method of contact regarding job opportunities.
Participants were contacted by email invitation and data was collected from 513 respondents. The online survey consisted of four multiple-choice questions, two of which allowed for “other” write-in responses.
Tables 1-4 provide the detailed results.

THE NEED:
Southeast Georgia Health System, the busiest urgent care center in the area, lost a physician due to a personal health crisis. The facility needed a replacement that could start work as soon as possible, so it was essential that any potential candidate be board certified and hold a Georgia license. Experience in Occupational Medicine was identified as a plus but was not required. The open position was for a hospital staff employee, so it was important that the candidate fit in well with the other physicians and staff in the urgent care clinic.
THE ACTION:
Markus initiated sourcing with a search of the PHG database for all family medicine physicians who were board certified, held a Georgia license and had expressed interest in changing jobs over the past six months. He enlisted PHG recruiter to cold call through the list and identifies qualified and interested candidates. Markus also sourced clients through a direct mail advertisement sent to candidates who were either trained or licensed in Georgia.
THE RESULT:
After six presents, the client scheduled an interview with Dr. T.R. Though T.R. was born, educated and had previously practiced in the Virginia/West Virginia/Pennsylvania area, he had a son who was enrolled for college this fall at the University of Georgia. Therein lay his tie to the State and his future employer.
It is worth noting that the client initially passed on interviewing Dr. T.R. due to, what appeared to be, a lack of career stability but actually was the result of relocations within the same health care organization. Once the recruiter persuaded the client to reconsider Dr. T.R. and grant him an interview, the client’s concerns were alleviated.
Another interview and several negotiations later, the client offered the job to Dr. T.R. and within one week, the contract was signed. Dr. T.R. immediately submitted his 60-day notice to resign from his current position, then completed his existing work commitment and relocated his family. In the interim period, the client employed a locum tenens physician.
Within six months, a replacement physician who fit well with existing staff and had ties to the community was hired and seeing patients. The new physician not only met the background requirements, he exceeded them. He was experienced and board certified in Occupational Medicine.
