The Association for Advancing Physician and Provider Recruitment’s (AAPPR) annual Internal Physician and Provider Recruitment Benchmarking Report shows that the huge demand for physicians continues to grow. The report shows “that active physician searches per year have more than doubled since 2017. Data also shows that 2022 marked the fifth straight year in which the percentage of searches filled decreased, as the demand for physicians remains competitive and labor remains scarce.” In addition a recent survey by The Physicians Foundations found that six in 10 doctors report feelings of burnout. And with the economy continuing to worsen and healthcare costs continuing to rise, we expect hospitals will face ongoing recruitment challenges in 2024. So what can you do?
In 2023 we demonstrated successful results in by investing in new and improved methods to reach residents and fellows as well as practicing physicians. In 2024 we have already allocated funds to procure an additional database source that will provides us with a greater number of personal emails and phone numbers. Additionally we plan to attend more meetings specifically aimed at targeting physicians in training.
