Measuring Physician Demand


Our job as a physician search firm has grown increasingly difficult over the years. The Internet has given physicians access to a plethora of opportunities and information, and combined with the limited supply of physicians, this has created a very high demand in the market. In every specialty, there are many more jobs than the supply will ever satisfy. This means that if your opportunity is not extremely competitive, there’s a good chance it won’t get filled in a short period of time. Of course you can always get lucky and find a candidate who is willing to accept less money and move to your town, but unfortunately that is a relatively rare occurrence in today’s market. Physicians are no different than anyone else.  They are looking for the best opportunity with the best pay in the best location to practice their preferred type of medicine.

At Pinnacle we have created a formula to measure demand by specialty and enable our clients to be more competitive in today’s market.  For each specialty we review the number of opportunities listed on the top three job boards and the total number of physicians in each specialty.  We then estimate the number of physicians retiring, and finally we estimate the number of new grads for the current year.  With this formula we are able to determine the measure of demand for each specialty which in turn gives our clients a firm idea on just how competitive their opportunity needs to be in order to attract the right candidates.
